Curator

The English term curator originates from the Latin "curare", meaning to take care of or to protect, as the original role of an art curator was to protect artworks from damage. Over time, the role developed to include a multitude of responsibilities beyond damage protection. Some alternative titles have been suggested, including conservator, custodian, keeper or caretaker. The word has stayed the same but ideas of protection of an artwork contained within the term "curator" has expanded to include a range of aspects of protection and care today. In many languages, the word is some version of curator or conservator that implies protection — as is the case in almost all Romance languages.

Have you ever considered why there are different words for "curator" in Arabic? For instance, the Louvre Abu Dhabi uses "أمين المتحف" (Ameen Mat-haf), while 421 Arts Campus uses "قيم فني" (Qayyem Fanni). The term Qayyem Fanni is broader and can be interchanged with Ameen Mat-haf as it encompasses organising exhibitions and events beyond the confines of a museum. However, Ameen Mat-haf specifically refers to curating within a museum, and so cannot be used interchangeably with Qayyem Fanni. The different terms for curator in the Arab world reflect various roles and responsibilities related to the preservation, organisation, and presentation of art to the public.
